Levin house sales are up 71 per cent from October 2014 as the Wellington Northern expressway sparks Wellington buyers’ interest.

Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) statistics showed 48 houses sold in October 2016, up significantly from the 28 houses sold in October 2014.

Compared to October 2015, there had been a 41 per cent increase.

Property Brokers Levin branch manager Rohan Teaz said the new road, from Wellington to Levin, was creating interest.

Although it would take a few years yet, people were looking at Levin as a base to commute, Teaz said.

“Our main buyers are still coming from Wellington and are retired. But people are starting to buy investment properties here.”

An 18-kilometre four-lane expressway along the Kapiti Coast was the first of the Wellington Northern Corridor projects under way.

It would separate local and highway traffic, making the commute faster.

The road would stretch from Wellington Airport to Levin, and is expected to be complete within the next 10 to 15 years.
