There’s this misconception that property investment is all about greed, and I think that’s crazy!
Sure, there are some investors out there just chasing the millionaire lifestyle. But most people? Their motives are completely different, and they vary from one individual to the next.
Think about it this way: What’s the one number one thing you want in life?
I’ll be honest – I think happiness is the absolute, ultimate answer. If you answered money… I think that’s wrong.
I say that because if you’re answering “money” it’s probably because having money makes you happy. Money doesn’t ‘buy’ happiness, but it can make you feel secure, it can give you freedom, and maybe it means you can spend more time with your kids, and those things make you happy.
When people come to me, the first thing I’ll ask is:
“What do you want to achieve?”
9 times out of 10, they’ll say: “I want to make money.”
So I have to go back to the key principle. What makes you happy?
How can property investment give you freedom?
Where, specifically, do you want to be in 5, 10, or 20 years?
And that’s when the answers get interesting:
“I want to be able to see my kids more.”
“I want to retire without worrying about my income.”
“We want extra income while one of us stays home to look after the kids.”
“I want to start my own business.”
“I want to be able to quit my job and go traveling for a year.”
I’ve had all of these answers, and so many more.
These are the people I help everyday. These people aren’t out for money for greed. They don’t want a million dollar yacht or a giant mansion or anything like that.
These are regular people looking to free themselves from the restrictions and limitations they feel are holding them back from being happy.
So my point is – yes, property investment is about creating wealth. But for most investors it’s not about “getting rich fast” to live a lavish millionaire lifestyle, it’s about freedom and security.
